Venue: THE INSTITUTE OF MECHANICAL ENGINEERS, One Birdcage Walk, SWI The venue for the dinner has been witness to the pride and success of mechanical engineering since the nineteenth century. Sir Henry Bessemer became a member of the Institute in July 1861 when he gave his address as the Bessemer Steel Works, Carlisle Street, Sheffield, which is where he had established his steel works around 1859. The current IMechE building was opened in 1899, the year after Sir Henry Bessemer’s death. When his name was removed from the registrar he was still using [...]

LAUNCH OF BESSEMER OXFORD SOCIETY

By | August 29th, 2017|Categories: Events, People, Technology|

The dinner was held on July 11th at Rhodes House, a Cotswold style mansion, with Colonial influences, in the heart of Oxford. The occasion was the launch of the Bessemer Society’s Oxford chapter. We had 50 guests, mainly CEOs and founders of start ups in the Oxford area, together with selected members of the Oxford innovation community. The Self-introductions section, plenty of good humour too.   Does Oxford have a problem? The theme of the evening was how the advent of ‘Patient Capital’ could create a step-change in the pace of [...]

The northern hard tech community On Feb 21st we held a dinner for 30 people in the Manchester Central Library’s swish, Cunard style, 1930s era, event space, next to the magnificent Town Hall, where we had held our first dinner in September. The purpose of the evening was to launch the northern chapter of the Bessemer Society. The guests were CEOs and founders of very high tech, hard tech, mainly small, venture companies in the north, together with representatives of organisations providing various kinds of professional support. Our sponsors were the law firm, [...]

Nov. 15th 2016 HONOURED GUESTS The evening started with selected members and guests giving a brief introduction to their concerns and interests: and highlighted the great depth of experience in the room. Honoured guests included: Sir Peter Williams, ex-CEO of Oxford Instruments, Chair of the National Physical Laboratory, and former treasurer of the Royal Society; and Prof Derek Fray of Cambridge University, the co-inventor of the ‘FFC Cambridge Process’ for the manufacture of aluminium and other alloys using a fraction of the energy required by conventional methods (therefore a true successor to Sir [...]

A SPECTACULAR DINNER AT THE MANCHESTER TOWN HALL

By | September 28th, 2016|Categories: Events, News, Technology|

We held our first northern meeting of the Society in Manchester on September 28th in the magnificent setting of the Mayor’s Parlour, designed by Alfred Waterhouse who also designed the Natural History Museum and the National Liberal Club (where I would personally love to hold a meeting of the Bessemer Society to enjoy its magnificent architectural self-confidence). We chose Manchester to extend the Bessemer Society’s reach northward so it does not become just another ‘network’ serving the Golden Triangle of London, Cambridge and Oxford; and to build links with local institutions and agencies. [...]
