LIFETIME FELLOWSHIP AWARD DINNER

By | January 3rd, 2020|Categories: News, People, Technology|

LONDON - November 20, 2019 Venue: THE CITY OF LONDON CLUB, Broad Street, EC1 The City of London Club exudes the club-like atmosphere of the old City, at the very heart of the financial community, and seemed a suitable location for the Award of our Lifetime Fellowship to Dr Drew Nelson, CEO and co-founder of IQE plc, which is listed on the AIM market. The Club building was completed in 1834, almost adjacent to the previous site of the Stock Exchange. Sir Henry Bessemer would have been 19 years of age at that [...]

FELLOWSHIP AWARD DINNER

LONDON - November 20, 2018 Venue: THE ARMOURERS AND BRASIERS HALL, City of London The Armourers Hall’s walls are lined with relics of a medieval past, it also has the sense of Victorian romanticism, which is accounted for by the fact the present Hall was completed in 1841 and then heavily ‘gothicised’ in 1871. The Armourers and Brasiers’ Company however dates back to 1322 and has been on the present site, amazingly, since 1346. What changes therefore it has seen, with all the glass and steel buildings around it now! Sir Henry Bessemer [...]

RISING TO THE BATTERY CHALLENGE DINNER

Oxford Said Business School, October 31st 2018 The dinner took place in the West Wing of the Said Business School, also known as The Thatcher Business Education Centre, which was completed in 2013. It was a break from our usual choice of venue where we try to make a link to the grandeur of our Victorian industrial heritage, compatible with the image that Bessemer evokes. The new-fangled West Wing building had a security system to prevent unauthorised entry, not surprisingly since the MBAs apparently pay up to £3000 a day to attend courses. [...]

LAUNCH OF BESSEMER OXFORD SOCIETY

By | August 29th, 2017|Categories: Events, People, Technology|

The dinner was held on July 11th at Rhodes House, a Cotswold style mansion, with Colonial influences, in the heart of Oxford. The occasion was the launch of the Bessemer Society’s Oxford chapter. We had 50 guests, mainly CEOs and founders of start ups in the Oxford area, together with selected members of the Oxford innovation community. The Self-introductions section, plenty of good humour too.   Does Oxford have a problem? The theme of the evening was how the advent of ‘Patient Capital’ could create a step-change in the pace of [...]

Nov. 15th 2016 HONOURED GUESTS The evening started with selected members and guests giving a brief introduction to their concerns and interests: and highlighted the great depth of experience in the room. Honoured guests included: Sir Peter Williams, ex-CEO of Oxford Instruments, Chair of the National Physical Laboratory, and former treasurer of the Royal Society; and Prof Derek Fray of Cambridge University, the co-inventor of the ‘FFC Cambridge Process’ for the manufacture of aluminium and other alloys using a fraction of the energy required by conventional methods (therefore a true successor to Sir [...]

A SPECTACULAR DINNER AT THE MANCHESTER TOWN HALL

By | September 28th, 2016|Categories: Events, News, Technology|

We held our first northern meeting of the Society in Manchester on September 28th in the magnificent setting of the Mayor’s Parlour, designed by Alfred Waterhouse who also designed the Natural History Museum and the National Liberal Club (where I would personally love to hold a meeting of the Bessemer Society to enjoy its magnificent architectural self-confidence). We chose Manchester to extend the Bessemer Society’s reach northward so it does not become just another ‘network’ serving the Golden Triangle of London, Cambridge and Oxford; and to build links with local institutions and agencies. [...]
